The Complete Guide to Custom Apparel Printing

What is custom apparel printing?

Custom apparel printing is the process of decorating clothing with logos, text, or graphics using specialized printing or embroidery techniques. Businesses, schools, teams, and organizations commonly use custom apparel for branding, uniforms, promotions, and events.

Common Decoration Methods

Screen Printing

Screen printing is a traditional apparel decoration method where ink is pushed through a mesh stencil onto fabric. Each color in the design requires its own screen, allowing printers to apply layers of ink to create the final image. Screen printing produces vibrant colors and extremely durable prints that hold up well over time. Because the setup process takes time, this method is most cost-effective for large orders such as event shirts, company uniforms, and school spirit wear. Screen printing works well on most apparel fabrics.

Embroidery

Custom embroidery is a decoration process where thread is stitched directly into fabric using computerized embroidery machines. The artwork is converted into a digital stitch file that tells the machine exactly how to sew the design. Embroidery produces a textured, professional appearance that is commonly used on polos, jackets, hats, and uniforms. Because the design is sewn into the garment rather than printed on top of it, embroidery is extremely durable and resistant to fading.  Embroidery works on nearly all apparel options.

DTG Printing

DTG (direct-to-garment) printing uses specialized inkjet printers to apply ink directly onto fabric. This method allows for high-resolution, full-color designs. Think of DTG printing a an industrial version of your home office color ink-jet printer, but designed to print shirts instead of paper. It allows full-color artwork and photographic designs. DTG printing works best on select 100% cotton-faced apparel.

DTF Printing

DTF (direct-to-film) printing transfers designs onto garments using film printed by specialized ink-jet printers and adhesive powder. The design is heat-pressed onto the garment. It works well on many fabrics and allows full-color artwork and photographic designs. DTF works great on most fabrics, including delicate performance fabrics.  We do not recommend it on 100% polyester fleece.

Choosing the Right Garment

The garment type also impacts the final result. Popular options include:

  • cotton T-shirts

  • performance apparel

  • fleece hoodies

  • polos

  • hats

High-quality garments often produce better printing results.

Artwork Requirements

Vector artwork is preferred for most printing methods because it scales without losing quality. Common file types include:

  • AI

  • EPS

  • PDF

  • SVG

High-resolution raster images (PNG files) work for DTG/DTF.
